Many of us face difficult obstacles every day that we have to overcome. But do yours challenge you mentally and physically? After working with Spartan Race, we have a new definition of what an obstacle actually entails.
Are you Spartan tough?
Voted the best obstacle race in 2011 by Outside Magazine, The Spartan Race takes racing to a new level requiring total athleticism, absolute discipline, and mental toughness. The international obstacle racing series was started by eight ultra-endurance athletes and a royal marine who wanted to create a world-class obstacle race unlike any other in the world. The series is comprised of three races, and if you complete it in one season, you are officially named an Ultimate Spartan.
Spartan Sprint is the first race to take place, where participants run, crawl, carry, and jump their way over three miles and through 15 obstacles. Almost everyone completes the Sprint and the top three male and female finishers qualify to move on for free to the second leg of the series – Olympic Super Spartan. This race steps up the ante with more than eight miles and 20 obstacles. But the Olympic Super Spartan is nothing compared to the Ultra Spartan Beast, the third and final part to the series with 12+ miles and more than 25 obstacles. The Spartan Race comes to each region in the United States and has long distance races in Canada and the UK, culminating in a World Championship Ultra Race in Vermont.
And if you make it through all three – Sprint, Olympic, and Ultra – you qualify to take part in an extra race called the Spartan Death Race. Created in 2005, this 48-hour race doesn’t have a determined mileage but warrants over a fail rate often more than 80%.
